16/10/2008Printer Friendly Page The University of Wales, Newport was one of three Welsh universities celebrating receiving their Carbon Management certificates from the Carbon Trust’s Higher Education Carbon Management (HECM) programme which identifies and implements carbon saving opportunities.
The HECM programme is designed to deliver improved energy management of academic, accommodation and leisure buildings and vehicle fleets.

“Prior to starting the scheme we were already doing a number of things to reduce our energy usage but completing the Carbon Trust Carbon Management programme has really helped us to focus clearly on how we can raise awareness of key issues,” said Matthew Bellamy, the University’s Environmental Officer.
“Our target is to reduce our energy use by 15% over the next five years through a combination of improved housekeeping procedures and installation of energy efficiency measures such as lighting sensors and thermostatic valves.
“The Carbon Trust has assisted us with the implementation of a monitoring and targeting system that will allow us to measure the energy consumption of 90% of the campus using a number of sub meters. This will help us to further reduce our energy consumption and carbon footprint, " he added.
